Ballarat's Historical Village
Sovereign Hill in Ballarat, Victoria has provided families and tourists with hours of historical and hands on fun since it's opening in 1970 as visitors are taken on a virtual journey back to the 1850's during Ballarat's goldrush years.
The historical village is spread over 25 hectares and is dotted with mines, tents and buildings that have been historically recreated to represent those found during the 1850's in Ballarat, Australia. Adding to the feel of authenticity are the costumed "locals" that wander the streets offering information and photo opportunities.
Stroll along the main street of Sovereign Hill which is lined with hotels, a theatre and shops where gold, confectionery, domestic ironware, jewellery and meat pies can be found.
Grap a pan, find a spot along the creek that winds through the village and then try your hand at panning for gold much like Ballarat prospectors of the past would have done. If you are lucky, you may discover your very own piece of gold to take home with you!
In the evening Sovereign Hill comes alive with the spectacular light-and-sound-show 'Blood on the Southern Cross' which depicts the famous 1854 Eureka Stockade.
For those wishing to spend the evening nearby after an exciting but tiring day, the Sovereign Hill Lodge offers 21st century motel accommodation with a taste of 19th century hospitality. When looking for great Ballarat accommodation, go no further than Sovereign Hill.
Opening hours: 10am to 5pm (5:30 during daylight savings) every day except Christmas Day.
